Sometimes words get in the way.

Art therapy gives us a different path.

Oak Park Child Art Therapist, Katie Kamholz
Oak Park Child Art Therapist, Katie Kamholz

I help children, adolescents, adults, and families through difficult life situations and complex emotional issues in order to make better choices that increase peace, awareness, and well-being in themselves and their relationships.

Together, we explore and work through challenges as you make your way to stronger relationships, health, and wholeness.

The roots of my clinical approach are humanistic and client-centered, and have also been informed by neuropsychology, and evidenced-based practices of cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) and dialectical behavior therapy (DBT). Offering individual, child & adolescent, and family art therapy and counseling, my studio is located in Oak Park, very close to Berwyn, River Forest, Forest Park, Chicago and other western suburbs.

My approach to Art Therapy is a more effective route to understanding your emotions

My practice specializes in the following:

  • Depression & Anxiety
  • Behavioral or emotional concerns at school or at home
  • Social difficulties
  • Issues associated with separation or divorce
  • Children and families involved in DCFS, foster care, or adoption
  • Survivors of trauma, including sexual abuse
  • Resolving early developmental trauma or attachment difficulties

I share with you my knowledge of the creative process, psychotherapy, and neuroscience to develop a plan that work best for how you think, feel, and process information.

Sometimes the process of talking about our feelings is difficult.

Engaging in art making provides a way to connect with and express our feelings in a deeper way.  When we understand our feelings, we are able to understand ourselves better and make healthier choices.

Let’s talk about how I can help you and your family

Oak Park Child Art Therapist, Katie Kamholz

“I believe in the power of creativity and art making to explore and express the unspeakable and find healing.”

Ever since I was a young child, I have made art to understand myself and the world around me better.

After graduating from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago with a Master of Arts in Art Therapy (MAAT) in 2004, I spent some time in Milwaukee working with the Bureau of Milwaukee Child Welfare, serving families and children in foster care.

When I returned to Chicago, I worked in both outpatient and inpatient settings, primarily with children and adolescents with trauma histories.  It was in this work that I was able to witness the power of art therapy for young folks who often did not have the words to talk about the difficult things they faced in their lives.

For over four years I’ve enjoyed teaching and supervising graduate art therapy students at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in the Art Therapy and Counseling department.

A resident of Oak Park for over a decade, I enjoy gardening, going to the Farmer’s Market (mostly for the donuts), cooking alongside my partner, and making art with my two children.

I want to be your co-journeyer on your path of hope and healing.

  • Board Certified Registered Art Therapist (ATR-BC)

“My child benefited from art therapy. Katie was wonderful. She worked wonders with my son’s anxiety and he now has tons of coping skills and is much better at regulating his feelings.”

From my blog

From the Therapist: My Most Recommended Books for Parents

“What else can I do for my child?”  This is a common question I hear from parents.  These parents want to learn more about their child, their child’s challenges, their parenting style, or ways that they can help themselves feel better about their parenting. These are...

From the Therapist: My Most Recommended Books for Young Children

Books are another wonderful way to communicate with your child. Looking at pictures together (usually snuggled or in close proximity), talking about the feelings we observe in the character, as well as being exposed to all different kinds of illustrations (art!) is...

“We were at our wits end with our 4.5 year old who had emotional outbursts we couldn’t seem to punish, bribe, or distract away.  The first time I talked to Katie on the phone her calm, empathetic, and non judgmental professional manner instantly put me at ease.  She also connected very quickly with my daughter.  Over the past year, she helped my daughter understand her emotions, develop a calm down plan, tools to help with nighttime anxieties, and work through friendship issues with peers.   Moreover, she gave me a new framework to look at my child that helped me parent with less shame and judgement, and hold better boundaries. I am so appreciative of the growth I’ve seen in my daughter since we began.   My daughter loves her time with Katie and I would recommend her without hesitation.”
